The world of beauty and wellness has built community among Black women for generations, and Cindy Tawiah, owner of Diva Day Spa located in Upperco, Maryland, proudly continues the tradition with her pink-accented haven.
Tawiah, who has dedicated her life to creating a safe and nurturing environment for women, is the CEO of Diva By Cindy Hair Care Products, the Diva Day Spa, and the program manager of the Diva Project. A former registered nurse, her journey from healthcare to entrepreneurship and her passion for serving women and making a difference in their lives began early.
At 16, she was inspired by her chemistry teacher to begin creating her own beauty products. This inspiration stayed with her throughout her nursing career, eventually leading her to open a hair salon and develop her own hair care brand. However, her ultimate dream was to create a space where women could feel supported, nurtured, and valued.
“I always desired to help women, serve , and support women, because as caregivers I felt that women gave so much and received so little,” says Tawiah. “And I wanted to create a safe space for women.”
This commitment to supporting and serving women is the driving force behind the spa’s unique offerings, which goes beyond facials and scrubs - Diva Day Spa also includes marriage counseling and business coaching services to provide not just physical relief, but also emotional and spiritual rejuvenation to ensure clients leave feeling lighter, happier, and transformed.
Since opening the Diva Day Spa, Cindy has been touched by the countless stories of gratitude and transformation from her clients.
“I have heard so many stories since starting this business,” shares Tawiah. “Most of my memories are of women who, after they received their first massage or facial, are just grateful and ecstatic and sometimes emotional as well. I have been blessed to see couples reunite, babies being birthed, and women starting their businesses as a result of having either yoni steam, a couples counseling session, or business coaching service.”

When asked what she wants people to know about her business, Tawiah says she wants everyone to know that the Diva Day Spa is a place of healing, change, and transformation.
“What I do at the Diva Day Spa is my calling. It’s what I was born to do,” says Tawiah. “I was a nurse for 13 years and always had the urge and desire to focus on primary healthcare, preventative care, and wellness and healing. I am so grateful that God is allowing me to fulfill my divine assignment. It means a lot to me and to those who are receiving it as well.”
Tawiah carries the heart of her mission into the marketing for her business, forming partnerships with Black influencers and bloggers who represent the women she serves, which she says is key.
“Our community needs healing and to understand that self-care is important,” she emphasizes. By intentionally working with creators of color, Tawiah is able to reach more women who can benefit from finding a welcoming and peaceful space.
In a world where women often bear the brunt of caregiving without adequate support, Diva Day Spa stands as a sanctuary of healing, transformation, and empowerment. Under Cindy Tawiah’s leadership, this spa and safe space continues to make a profound impact on the lives of women in the DMV and beyond, helping them feel valued, rejuvenated, and whole.
“I wouldn’t do anything else,” says Tawiah. “I love what I do.”
